Enhanced Recovery Programme 2010
Modern techniques such as the introduction of laparoscopic surgery and the advent of newer anaesthetic agents have improved the recovery of patients after surgery. However post operative recovery is a multifactorial process depending on the after care as well as the immediate surgical and anaesthetic procedure. This course reviews the entire patient journey addressing all of the processes that influence the rate of post operative recovery in order to ensure that patients return to their pre-operative status as soon as possible. The roles of anaesthesia, surgery, early mobilisation and feeding and pre and post operative nursing are discussed in order to develop protocols that can lead to patients being discharged as soon as 3 days after major colonic surgery.
